‘Hung Up’ is a desktop film that offers a critical perspective on the reliance of Google Translate in cultural understandings, as well as exploring what cultural meanings are neglected in machine translations.

The film is composed of screen and audio recordings of desktops and mobile devices. Set in the digital landscape, the physical world is portrayed through the lens of Google Translate, which constitutes our understanding of the world and narrates our story of living abroad for 2 years in Germany.

‘Hung Up’s portrayal of the world through Google Translate is important for the modern world when everything is globalised and digitalised. It highlights the fact that meanings are made sensible by machines, and hence, the world is constantly looked at by machines. It asks the question: what kind of world is forming? And when languages, such as Cantonese, are excluded in the formation, what does that mean for those cultures?
